“Barns of McHenry County Series #1” - 1996-97 - watercolor sketch. Gene was invited by the McHenry County Historical Society to join other artists in capturing the barns in McHenry County, Illinois. He traveled around the county sketching and painting barns in various conditions. This one is located at Highway 14, west of Harvard.

“Barns of McHenry County Series #3” - 1996-97 - watercolor sketch. This barn, titled by Gene “Going…” is (or was) located at Airport Road at Flat Iron Road south of Harvard, Illinois. The blues and greys of the siding capture the deterioration of the barn, symbolic of the demise of small farms across the Midwest.

“Barns of McHenry County Series #4” - 1996-97 - watercolor sketch. Located at Lincoln Road at Brandenburg, east of McHenry, this sketch of a newer barn and its outlying buildings is nestled in the windbreak of evergreens.

“Barns of McHenry County Series #5” - 1996-97 - watercolor sketch. As barns and farms were abandoned, the structures slowly deteriorated and left behind the stone or brick foundations. This one titled by Gene “…gone.” was located at Alden Road, south of State Line Road, Harvard, Illinois.
