“Barns of McHenry County Series #1” - 1996-97 - watercolor sketch. Gene was invited by the McHenry County Historical Society to join other artists in capturing the barns in McHenry County, Illinois. He traveled around the county sketching and painting barns in various conditions. This one is located at Highway 14, west of Harvard.

The blues and greys of the siding capture the deterioration of the barn, symbolic of the demise of small farms across the Midwest.
